The history of Peru in the last two centuries starts with the events leading up to independence, and ends with its vicissitudes in the second decade of the XXI century. The conductive thread of the narration is the reform projects that about every half century changed the profile of Peruvian history and aligned it to the major global processes, usually born from a criticism of the then existing situation, a diagnosis of ills and a proposal for corrective reforms. Their authors did not though always manage to persuade the people of the goodness of those choices, or benefit from favorable circumstances for putting them into practice, and when they did, the results were a series of successes and failures this book attempts to trace objectively and carefully. The book is particularly aimed at college freshmen, but also contains new and original interpretations for more advanced readers. Each chapter includes statistical records, illustrations and short documents amplifying the above details or presenting alternative arguments. This fifth edition also includes significant updates and a fully recrafted final chapter.
